FRONTIER HELP - ENGINES

MILITARY HYPERDRIVES

"A Military Hyperdrive will give your ship advantages over the competition, but it will cost you to run it. In the same way as Standard Hyperdrives, the range is a function of the size of tHe ship and the maximum possible range for the engine. Military Hyperdrives are not widely available and there are only three classes for sale. The reason is thought to be instability occurring in bigger engines, but rumours say that military engineers are working on this problem. They are also reputed to be making even lighter engines."

There are advantages and disadvantages to both types of drive, as shown in the following table:

Military Hyperdrives Standard Hyperdrives
Size equivalent to a Standard drive 1 class larger Size equivalent to a Military drive 1 class smaller
3 times as expensive as Standard drives 3 times cheaper than Military drives
Typical fuel cost: 25 Credits per unit Typical fuel cost: 10 Credits per unit
Fuel is not available at Very Small starports Fuel is available at all starports
Produces undesirable (and possibly illegal) waste products Produces no waste products
Maximum size :Class 3 Maximum size :Class 8
Stocked in fewer starports Stocked in more starports

I recommend Military Hyperdrives for smaller craft where speed is vital (e.g. on Courier or Photography missions), and Standard Hyperdrives fvor larger craft, especially Traders. With a Military Drive, I recommend that you jettisson all the Radioactives produced as soon as you enter the system.
